Our Must-Try Traditional Cypriot Cuisines

Halloumi cheese in a bowl with tomatoes

One of the highlights of visiting Cyprus is indulging in the traditional Cypriot food and drink. Influenced by its history and geographical location, Cypriot food combines elements from Greek, Turkish, and Middle Eastern cuisines. The result is a unique fusion of flavours that will leave you craving for more. Traditional dishes in Cyprus often feature ingredients such as olive oil, halloumi cheese, lamb, and fresh seafood.

Souvlaki

One must-try dish is "Souvlaki," which consists of skewered and grilled pieces of marinated pork or chicken. It is usually served with pita bread, tzatziki sauce, and a side of salad. It’s absolutely to-die-for! One thing the Cypriots are known for is their generous portions, so come prepared for a mouthwatering feast.

Another popular dish is "Moussaka," a layered casserole made with minced meat, eggplant, and béchamel sauce. The combination of flavours and textures in this dish is simply divine, a true local delicacy that is as comforting as it is mouthwatering.

In addition to the traditional dishes, Cyprus is also known for its unique local delicacies. One such delicacy is "Loukoumades," which are small deep-fried dough balls drizzled with honey and sprinkled with cinnamon. These bite-sized treats are incredibly addictive and make for the perfect sweet indulgence.

Another must-try dish is "Kleftiko," a traditional slow-cooked lamb dish. The lamb is marinated with herbs and spices, wrapped in parchment paper, and cooked in a clay oven for several hours. The result is tender, melt-in-your-mouth lamb that is bursting with flavour.

For dessert lovers, "Baklava" is a must-try. This sweet pastry is made with layers of filo pastry, nuts, and honey syrup. The combination of crunchy filo pastry and sweet honey syrup is simply heavenly. You can enjoy this served cold or warm. My personal preference is to have it warmed and served with vanilla ice cream. That first mouth full will be unmatched, I promise you.

To truly experience the food and drink in Cyprus, you’ll want to find the best local taverna in your chosen area; where your hosts will greet you with open arms and, often with traditional entertainment that gets everybody up on the dancefloor - so you too can dance like nobody's watching.

Beyond Food: Unique Things to do in Cyprus

Cyprus is not just about the food and drink; it also offers a plethora of unique things to do that go beyond the dining table. Whether you want to stroll along the sandy shores, experience the buzzing nightlife of Ayia Napa or visit the quaint traditional towns, you’ll be sure to find everything you’re looking for from this unique beach destination that leaves every visitor wanting more.

One such experience is exploring the traditional villages of Cyprus. Take a stroll through the narrow cobblestone streets, visit local artisans, and immerse yourself in the rich cultural heritage of the island. Places like Lefkara and Omodos are known for their traditional crafts and charming architecture. As you wander through rustic, whitewashed buildings, you’ll be sure to see arches adorned with stunning fuschia flowers from the Island’s famous bougainvillea plants. Prefect for those Instagrammable shots.

For adventure seekers, another thing to do in Cyprus is to visit the Troodos Mountains. Hike through breathtaking trails, discover hidden waterfalls, and breathe in the fresh mountain air. One tip we’d recommend is to take a light layer with you, the temperature up in the mountains is considerably lower than the peak heat of the shores. The Troodos region is also home to several wineries where you can indulge in wine tasting while enjoying the stunning mountain views.

Exploring Cyprus's Wine Culture

No exploration of Cyprus's food and drink scene would be complete without diving into its rich wine culture. Cyprus has a long history of wine production, dating back over 5,000 years. The island is home to unique grape varieties, such as Xynisteri and Mavro, which produce exceptional wines with distinct characteristics. You’ll often find these wines on the menu at local restaurants so be sure to sample them with your meal!

One of the most famous wines in Cyprus is Commandaria, which is often referred to as the world's oldest named wine. Made from sun-dried grapes, Commandaria has a rich, sweet taste that pairs beautifully with desserts or cheese.

Visiting the local wineries is a must-do activity for wine enthusiasts and should be top of your list of things to do in Cyprus. Many wineries offer guided tours and tastings, allowing visitors to learn about the wine-making process and sample a variety of wines. From boutique wineries to larger estates, Cyprus has a wine experience for every taste.
